Could I Have a Gas Leak?

Although not common, gas leaks can occur and can be deadly. If you suspect a gas leak, it’s important to get out of the home right away and call 911 immediately. If you suspect a significant gas leak, leave the home and call 911.

Make Sure You’re Prepared. How to Tell if You Have a Gas Leak

Most people don’t know they have a gas leak until it is a serious issue. Yet, small amounts of gas present in the home do give off subtle hints that you can be on the lookout for. Here are some simple things to look for that could indicate a problem.

• You hear a hissing sound, especially around gas appliances. This may indicate a large leak and an emergency situation. You may experience these from the main gas lines or smaller lines in your home.
• Your gas bill is higher than normal. You may notice this bill climbing month after month, even you aren’t using anything differently. This can indicate a problem, as well.
• You don’t feel well, or kids seem to be lacking energy. Headaches, nausea, fatigue, and chest pain can be indications of a gas leak.
• You smell sulfur or rotten eggs. This is not always present, however, if you smell this, you are generally smelling natural gas.
• Your houseplants are no longer thriving. Small amounts of gas in the air can cause damage to your houseplants.

In any of these situations, call on the experts at Stormy Plumbing to come out and check for a gas leak. It’s also a good idea to have an annual inspection just to make everything is in good working condition.
